WHY DO WE NEED A SHOWER FILTER?
There are many reasons why we need to filter our drinking water, and most of us already know
how important this is to our health. But why would we need to filter the water we bathe
in....afterall, we are not drinking it.
Well, actually you might say you really ARE drinking it.....through your skin. The skin is the
body's largest elimination organ. We have 2000+ pores in just one foot. So you can imagine
how many pores there are in the whole body. Our bodies actually absorb residue from anything
that comes in contact with the skin. That's a scary thought when you think of all the things we
come in contact with on a daily basis. But it is especially true when it comes to bathing in warm
and/or hot water. The heat opens our pores, and in comes whatever is in the water. Most water
contains heavy metals like mercury and lead. It also has been treated with chlorine to kill
bacteria. Another harmful thing being added to water is flouride. You probably think that your
water is safe or they would not allow it to be supplied to your homes. Unfortunately that is not
the case. The Environmental Protection Agency does regulate it, and water does have to be
within limits for the contaminants. But there are trace amounts of these and many other toxins
and carcinogens in our water.
One of the biggest things that we should be concerned about in our shower water is the chlorine.
It becomes a gas when it sprays into the air from the shower. We then inhale it into our lungs.
Studies show that we consume more chlorine in the shower than we would if we drank unfiltered
water all day. Now that is a scary thought. But what is so bad about chlorine? There are many
harmful things about chlorine, but I am not going to address all of them. You can always do an
internet search on the harmful effects of chlorine. What I want to address is the effect it has on
just the thyroid gland.
The thyroid gland is a regulator of not only the body's temperature and metabolism, it also helps
to regulate other glands in the body. If it is not working properly, you could experience
problems with your weight, hot flashes and night sweats, cold hands and feet, mental fog,
forgetfulness, short-term memory loss, insomnia, depression, loss of lobido, headaches, loss of
energy, aches and pains, heart related problems, and hormone issues...just to name a few. And
now research is showing that other illnesses such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue can be
related to poor thyroid function.
So how does chlorine affect the thyroid? The thyroid needs iodine to function. Chlorine
displaces iodine, so it can actually block the iodine from the thyroid. The same is true of
flouride. Iodine, chlorine, bromine, and flourine are all part of the "halogen group", and the
ones with the lower weight can displace the ones with higher weights. Since iodine has the
highest weight, all the others interfere with iodine in the body.

Since there now seems to be an enormous amout of people with thyroid problems, a large part of
the problem could be coming from our water. We do get chlorine and flouride from many other
places, and we should try to limit our exposure to them as well. But the water we drink and
bathe in is something that we are exposed to every day, so that is a good place to start.

It can be used with any shower head or hand-held shower, so you don't have to give up your favorite shower head. It's easy to install, and doesn't appear to have a problem with leaking.
